Journal of the National Museum in Warsaw. New Series
Issue number fourteen of Rocznik Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie. Nowa Seria / Journal of the National Museum in Warsaw. New Series opens with an article by Nawojka Cieślińska-Lobkowicz on the collector and Polish museum donor Tadeusz Wierzejski. Coming next in the Museum section is a piece by Konrad Niemira tracking the history of a selection of paintings from the historical collection of the Radziwiłł family at the Królikarnia Palace. The second section of the latest Journal issue brings together several articles devoted to early modern art. Joanna Sikorska analyzes an engraving by Lucas Cranach the Elder from the perspective of the master’s artistic rivalry with Albrecht Dürer, while Piotr Czyż writes about the reuse of printing plates as painting supports, with a focus on two works from the NMW collection. Karolina Prymlewicz presents new findings and hypotheses concerning the subject matter and authorship of an allegorical painting from the NMW’s Gallery of 19th Century Art attributed to Franciszek Smuglewicz. An article by Rūta Janonienė, meanwhile, covers the biographies and artistic legacies of two other members of the Smuglewicz line: Józef and Filip Smuglewicz. Finally, Andrzej Pieńkos discusses Jean-Baptiste Greuze’s The Bird-Catcher Tuning His Guitar from the NMW collection and other early paintings in Italian costume by the same artist. Closing the issue is a pair of texts looking back at and honouring two of our late NMW colleagues.
