Dr Aleksandra Sulikowska-Bełczowska she works in the Collection of Ancient and East Christian Art of the National Museum in Warsaw, where she is responsible for the Nubian and Ethiopian Collections as well as the Collection of Icons and Byzantine Crafts. She is also an assistant professor at the Institute of Art History of the University of Warsaw. Her specialty are Byzantine art, icon painting of the 15th- and 16th-century and late Russian painting in particular, art of the Old Believers. In 2004, she defended her dissertation under the mentorship of Prof. Dr Hab. Barbara Dąb-Kalinowska on “Spory o ikony na Rusi w XV– XVI w.” [Conflicts around icons in Ruthenia in the 15th- and 16th-century] whose expanded version was published in 2007 under the same title, while its English translation, The Icon Debate. Religious Images in Russia in the 15th and 16th Centuries, was issued in 2016. She has written about Kievan Rus’, icon painting and 15th- and 16th-century Orthodox miniature art, as well as artistic tradition of the Old Believers in the 17th-19th centuries. She is the co-author of the books Ikony. Przedstawienia maryjne z kolekcji Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie [Icons. Marian representations in the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw] (2004) and Sacralia Ruthenica. Dzieła staroruskie bądź z Rusią związane z metalu i kamienia w Muzeum Narodowym w Krakowie i w Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie / Sacralia Ruthenica. Early Ruthenian and Related Metal and Stone Items in the National Museum in Cracow and National Museum in Warsaw (2006). Her latest book, Ciała, groby i ikony. Kult świętych w prawosławnej tradycji literackiej i ikonograficznej [Bodies, tombs and icons. The cults of saints in the Russian orthodox literary and iconographic tradition] (2013), discussing the relationship between the cults of icons and relics, became the basis of Sulikowska’s postdoctoral thesis defended in 2014.
