Ethics

Ensuring the high scholarly and editorial standards of Rocznik Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie. Nowa Seria / Journal of the National Museum in Warsaw. New Series goes hand in hand with upholding ethical standards by everyone involved in the publication process. The following rules of editorial ethics, integrity, and scientific value are based on the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE): https://publicationethics.org/. They apply to the authors of articles as well as to the editorial and peer-review processes.

  1. Rules for Authors
    • Authors declare that the submitted article is an original work based on original scholarly research, does not infringe on any third-party copyright, and has not been published or submitted elsewhere.
    • Authors disclose any co-authorship, including contributions made by other individuals to the article and the research.
    • Plagiarism, self-plagiarism, ghostwriting, hidden or false co-authorship, and other unethical practices are not permitted.
    • Authors confirm that the personal data and information required by the editorial team are accurate and up-to-date.
    • Authors are required to disclose any sources of funding and the involvement of other entities in the research and in the creation of the article.
    • Authors must obtain permission from rights holders to use any copyrighted materials (e.g., photographs) in the article or consent from individuals portrayed if their likeness is included.
    • Authors declare that all research was carried out in accordance with recognized standards of research integrity, as set forth in the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.
    • Authors must provide references to all sources of quotations, theses, and research findings by other authors cited in the article.
    • Authors are obliged to collaborate with the editorial team at every stage of preparing the article for publication.
    • Authors must inform the editorial team of any errors or ethical concerns they discover in the text at any stage of the publication process.
    • Authors sign a license agreement granting the publisher a non-exclusive, royalty-free license (CC BY 4.0) to use the article in the journal. Authors retain unlimited copyright.
  2. Rules for Reviewers
    • Reviewers should hold at least a doctoral degree and be active researchers. Their specialization and research interests must align with the subject of the article under review. If a reviewer lacks expertise in the text’s area, they should refuse to review it.
    • Reviewers must disclose to the editorial team any conflicts of interest with the author.
    • Reviewers should report any detected ethical violations or breaches of research integrity in the manuscript.
    • Reviewers must evaluate articles objectively. Any form of discrimination based on the author’s age, gender, race, or religion is prohibited. Personal or subjective remarks about the author are not acceptable; reviewers must treat the author with respect.
    • Reviewers must conduct a thorough reading and analysis of the article and provide constructive criticism regarding its scholarly content and linguistic quality.
    • Reviewers point out any factual errors or omissions in sources to help improve the article.
    • Reviewers should communicate remarks and objections clearly and suggest corrections and amendments.
    • Reviewers are obliged to complete the review within the agreed-upon timeframe set by the editorial team.
    • Reviewers must not use the article for purposes other than the review. The content of the article is confidential.

  3. Rules for the Editorial Team
    • The editorial team evaluates the academic quality and linguistic standard of submitted articles.
    • The editorial team conducts evaluations objectively. Any discrimination based on the author’s age, gender, race, or religion is strictly prohibited.
    • When evaluating an article, the editorial team may consult the Scientific Council.
    • The editorial team selects reviewers based on the article’s subject matter and ensures impartiality and integrity in the review process.
    • The editorial team may propose substantive and language-related changes to the article.
    • The editorial team must respond appropriately to any instance of publication ethics breaches or violations of research integrity discovered during the creation, review, or editing of an article.
    • The editorial team screens articles for plagiarism and self-plagiarism using the Crossref Similarity Check system with iThenticate.
    • The editorial team makes the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of the article.
    • The editorial team must not use the content of submitted but unpublished articles for any purpose other than editorial work. The content of the article is confidential.
  4. Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    • The use of AI technologies in the creative process (writing the article, formulating theses and conclusions) is prohibited.
    • Authors may use AI tools solely to check the linguistic and stylistic correctness of an article.
    • Any AI usage by authors must be disclosed in the article, specifying its scope.
    • Reviewers must not employ AI technologies to evaluate the article or write their reviews, as it risks breaches of confidentiality and may result in inaccurate assessments.
    • The editorial team must not use AI in scholarly or language editing, as doing so may violate confidentiality.
  5. Procedures for Handling Violations of Publication Ethics and Research Integrity
    • Suspected violations of publication ethics or research integrity are investigated by the editorial team after explanations are obtained from the authors.
    • If copyright or image rights are violated at any stage of the publication process, editorial work on the article will be suspended. Failure to provide the necessary permissions or statements will result in the article’s rejection.
    • If the editorial team discovers authorship violations (e.g., plagiarism, self-plagiarism, ghostwriting, hidden or false co-authorship), the article will be rejected, and the violation will be reported to the institution(s) with which the author(s) are affiliated.
    • If an editor or reviewer is suspected of dishonest or biased work, they will be removed from the editorial or review process. Their tasks will be assigned to another qualified individual.
