Stefaan Hautekeete is an art historian, graduate of the University of Ghent (1988). Since 1989, he is the curator of the Collection of Old Master Drawings at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels. His research focuses primarily on landscape and cityscape drawings and prints of the 16th and 17th century. Since 2000, he is a member of the International Advisory Committee of Keepers of Public Collections of Graphic Art. He has published several books on Rik Wouters and many articles on the draughtsmanship of, i.a., Peeter Baltens, Joachim Patinir, Jacob de Wit, Rogier van der Weyden, Peter Paul Rubens, and Hans Bol. He was involved in the preparation of numerous permanent galleries and exhibitions, such as The Painter and the Surveyor: Imaging Brussels and the Former Duchy of Brabant (2000), Drawings by Rembrandt and His Students out of the Collection of Jean de Grez (2005), Dutch Drawings of the Golden Age from the De Grez Collection (2007–8), Disegno & Colour. Italian and French Drawings from the 16th until the 18th Century (2012–13), From Floris to Rubens. Master Drawings from a Belgian Private Collection (2016), Rik Wouters: A Retrospective (2017). Since 2007, he is participating in the international research project: “City and society in the Low Countries (1200–1800): space, knowledge, social capital.” In this framework, he is currently preparing a PhD on Hans Bol, with a full catalogue raisonné. He contributed to the edition of The New Hollstein Dutch & Flemish Etchings, Engravings and Woodcuts 1450–1700 volumes on Hans Bol (2015).
