Prof. Antoni Ziemba is an art historian and lecturer at the University of Warsaw. Between 1993 and 2019, he was the chief curator of Medieval and Early Modern European Art at the National Museum in Warsaw. His main research interests are 17th-century Dutch art, 15th- and 16th-century Netherlandish and German art, and the theory of art from the late Middle Ages to the 17th century. He is the author of Nowe Dzieci Izraela. Stary Testament w kulturze holenderskiej XVII wieku [Israel’s new children. The Old Testament in 17th-century Dutch culture] (2000), Iluzja a realizm. Gra z widzem w sztuce holenderskiej 1580–1660 [Illusion and realism. Playing with the viewer in Dutch art, 1580–1660] (2005), Sztuka Burgundii i Niderlandów 1380–1500 [The art of Burgundy and the Netherlands 1380–1500], vol. 1: Sztuka dworu burgundzkiego oraz miast niderlandzkich [The art of the court of Burgundy and the cities of the Netherlands] (2008), vol. 2: Niderlandzkie malarstwo tablicowe 1430–1500 [Netherlandish panel painting, 1430–1500] (2011); vol. 3: Wspólnota rzeczy. Sztuka niderlandzka i północnoeuropejska 1380–1520 [English edition: The Agency of Art Objects in Northern Europe, 1380–1520, 2021] (2015). Ziemba co-wrote the National Museum in Warsaw’s catalogue of Malarstwo niemieckie do 1600 roku [German painting before 1600] (2000) and a guidebook to the Gallery of Medieval Art (2017). He was the co-author of the Museum’s two permanent galleries: the Gallery of Medieval Art (from 2013) and the Gallery of Ancient Art (arts and crafts, painting, sculpture, from 2016). He has conceived or co-authored exhibitions and their catalogues, including Caravaggio „Złożenie do Grobu”: arcydzieło Pinakoteki Watykańskiej.
